There are few shelters for
street children and some organizations and foundations are
taking care about street children. However the number is
growing and the facilities not enough. I do admire those who
are working with street children as I know how hard it is.
I rented a big house in Nairobi
in 2002 and took in a group of street boys I met in the
streets in Nairobi. I had no knowledge about street
children's behavior all I wanted is to start a shelter for
street children and take care about them. It was very
difficult to deal with these children. They were fighting,
stealing, sniffing glue and were not willing to cooperate or
to follow the rules. After years of stress we gave up. We
tried to maintain these boys but due to lack of knowledge
and skills we were not able to keep the boys. One after
another one left, or was sent away. We were left with two of
them, James and Charles. They came to live with us in
Mombasa. However these boys finally left also. James was
sent away for serious misbehavior and theft and Charles
because of theft. James now works within another orphanage
and Charles is not found since then.
In the meanwhile other children
were brought in to us. We were cooperating with the children
department in Nairobi and police. We moved from Nairobi to
Thika where we started to shelter smaller children. Mama
Jane moved with us too to Thika and later moved with us to
Mtwapa. In July 2008 we moved from Mtwapa North to Kikambala.
We are right now located in Kikambala where we have rented a
three bedroom bungalow with a big compound. We moved from
one place to another due to harrasment of landlords or
agents and because of space problems. The last time we moved
was due to the fact that the agent needed the house for
business purpose. We are planning to built a centre where we
can host our children, and a school to educate them. Soon we
let you know where this will happen.... |
